Profile of Department :
The Department of Sociology in our college is as old as the college itself. Established in the year 1986, it is set up in our college to impart and enhance the knowledge about the present society and the community in which we live. The subject helps students to mould their personality by learning the concepts and inculcating them in their social life. One of objectives of prescribing this subject in UG Course is to make students to acquaint with subjects like Rural Sociology, Urban Sociology, Concepts and Theories, Research Methodology and also learn about the Contemporary Social Problems and get aware about the Women Rights, which is the need of the hour. Sociology and Rural Development papers are very popular optional in Competitive Exams like IAS and KAS and the knowledge pertaining to social issues plays a very significant role in competitive exams.
The Department of Sociology was headed by Dr. Veena Sankangoudar, former Head of the Department and retired as Principal.Smt. Parvati Sheelavant, a full time teacher was appointed by the management who carried out the department activities till 2017-18, later for one year Ms. Indira Khalbhavi and Smt. Shanta Nadiger took over the charge. At present Dr.Ashvini Patil, Assistant Professor is heading the department.
The student who scores highest marks in Sociology subject at B.A-I, i.e in First and Second Semester will be awarded with an endowment cash prize of Rs.8000/- in memory of Late Shri Shantanagouda Sanganagouda Patil every year. The Department has achieved 100% results all through the years. The Department organizes special lectures, webinars and awareness programmes not only on the syllabus but also on the current isues. Our Alumni have enrolled for PG in Sociology in universities. Many are in good positions and made good careers in all social sectors.
